Euonymus

  • Type: Evergreen or deciduous shrubs and small trees.
  • Foliage: Many are grown for their attractive, often variegated leaves (green and gold, or green and cream)
  • Growth habit: Compact, Tidy, often used for low hedging, ground cover, or as specimen plants.

Examples:

  • Euonymus fortunei (spindle) - climbing or spreading

Ceanothus (California Lilac)

  • Type: Evergreen or Semi-evergreen shrubs.
  • Foliage & Flowers: Known for their stunning blue to purple flowers in spring/summer; leaves are small and glossy
  • Growth habit Dense, fast-growing, good for hedges, screens, or wall training.
  • Care: Prefers full sun and well-drained soil; not keen on heavy pruning.

Examples:

  • Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 'Skylark' - compact, blue flower.
  • Ceanothus arboreus - larger, tree-like habit.

Hebe

  • Type: Evergreen shrubs (native to New Zealand)
  • Foliage & Flowers: Attractive foliage, often rounded or lance-shaped, with spikes of flowers in shades of purple, blue, pink, or white.
  • Growth habit: Low, bushy, or medium shrubs, perfect for borders or coastal gardens.
  • Care: Thrive in well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.

Examples:

  • Hebe albicans - compact, grey-green foliage.
  • Hebe 'Great Orme' - larger, with lilac/pink flowers.
