Cyclamen are lovely tuberous perennials, prized for their charming flowers and decorative leaves. They're widely grown both as indoor pot plants and outdoor garden plants.

Type:

  • Tuberous perennial.

Origin:

  • Mediterranean, Europe, Middle East.

Foliage:

  • Heart-shaped or rounded leaves, often silver or patterned.

Flowers:

  • Upswept, reflexed petals in shades of pink, red, white, or purple.

Main Types:

Cyclamen persicum

  • The familiar indoor florist's cyclamen
  • Blooms in winter with bright flowers and patterned leaves.
  • Prefers cool indoor spots (not hot rooms).

Cyclamen heberifolium

  • Hardy outdoor species.
  • Autumn-flowering with ivy-like leaves.
  • Great for naturalising under trees.

Cyclamen Coum

  • Hardy, winter and early spring flowering.
  • Rounded leaves, pink to magenta flowers.

Cyclamen Cilicium

  • Autumn flowering, fragrant, with marbled leaves.

Care tips

Indoors (florist's cyclamen, persicum):

  • Light: Bright but indirect light.
  • Temperature: Cool room (ideally 10-18C).
  • Watering: Keep soil just moist, water from below if possible (avoid wetting the crown).
  • After flowering: Let leaves die back, rest the tuber dry over summer, then resume watering in Autumn.
