Type:

  • Epiphytic orchid (grows on trees in nature).

Origin:

  • Southeast Asia, the Philippines, northern Australia.

Foliage:

  • Broad, leathery green leaves.

Flowers:

  • Large, rounded blooms (resembling moths in flight) in white, pink, yellow, purple, or speckled/patterned varieties.

Flowering Time:

  • Usually once or twice a year, but blooms can last 2-4 months.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh midday sun (which can scorch leaves).
  • Temperature: Prefers 18-25C (65-75F) Tolerates average home conditions.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then allow to nearly dry before watering again. About once a week in summer, every 10-14 days in winter. Avoid letting water sit in the crown of the plant - risk of rot.
  • Humidity: Likes moderate humidity (50-70%). Mist lightly or place on a humidity tray if air is dry.
  • Fertiliser: Weak orchid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks while in growth/flower.
  • After flowering: Cut the flower spike down to the base if it turns brown. If still green, cut just above a node (small bump) to encourage a secondary flower spike.

Tips for Success:

  • Clear plastic orchid pots help monitor root health - healthy roots are green/silver.
  • Repot every 1-2 years using orchid bark mix, not normal soil.
  • Great for beginners - more forgiving than many orchid types.
