Kalanchoe is a beautiful and versatile group of plants, often grown as a houseplants or in warm climates outdoors.

 

Type:

  • Succulent (from the Crassulaceae family).

Origin:

  • Native to madagascar and tropical Africa.

Foliage:

  • Thick, fleshly leaves that store water. Some are smooth, others fuzzy or scalloped.

Flowers:

  • Clusters of small, long-lasting blooms in red, pink, orange, yellow, or white.

Popular Types:

  • Kalanchoe Bossfeldiana - the most common houseplant type, with bright clusters of flowers.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light (can handle some direct sun).
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then let soil dry before watering again (Avoid overwatering - root rot).
  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, protect from frost.
  • Soil: Free-draining cactus or succulent mix.
  • Feeding: A light succulent fertiliser in spring/summer.
  • Pruning: Deadhead flowers to encourage new blooms.

Uses:

  • Excellent as a houseplant for long-lasting winter/spring flowers.
  • Great in succulent arrangements or small containers.
  • Some trailing types look good in hanging baskets.
