Bromelia (or more commonly called Bromeliad) is a striking tropical plant from the Bromeliaceae family. They're popular as houseplants because of their bold rosettes of leaves and dramatic, long-lasting flower bracts.

Type:

  • Epiphytic or terrestrial perennial.

Origin:

  • Central & South America (rainforests, mountains, deserts).

Foliage:

  • Rosettes of tough, often spiny-edged leaves. Some species have striped or variegated foliage

Flowers:

  • Brilliant, showy bracts (red, orange, pink, yellow) with tiny flowers in the centre. The colourful bracts can last for several months.

Life cycle:

  • Each rosette blooms once, then produces offsets ("pups") before dying back.

Popular Types of Indoors:

  • Guzmania: Smooth green leaves, bright red/orange/yellow bracts.
  • Vriesea: Flat, sword-like flower spikes in vivid colours.
  • Aechmea Fasciata (urn Plant): Silver-striped leaves, pink bract with blue flowers.
  • Neoregelia: Foliage-focused; centre turns bright red or pink at flowering.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Some (like Neoregelia) tolerate stronger light, which brings out leaf colours.
  • Watering: Keep a little water in the central cup (the rosette). Empty and refresh the cup regularly to prevent stagnation. Water soil lightly, letting it dry a bit between watering.

Humidity:

  • Loves higher humidity (50-70%). Mist or place on a pebble tray if air is dry.

Temperature:

  • Warm conditions (18-27C / 65-80F). Avoid cold drafts.

Feeding:

  • Dilute liquid fertiliser monthly in spring/summer. A few drops into the rosette or soil is enough.

Propagation:

  • Separate offsets (pups) once they're about 1/3 the size of the mother plant.

Styling/Uses

  • Perfect as a tabletop or centrepiece plant.
  • Works well indoor tropical arrangements (with orchids, ferns, calatheas).
  • Can be mounted on bark or driftwood (epiphytic style) for a more natural look.
