Spathiphyllum - commonly called the Peace Lily. Is a classic indoor plant, grown for its glossy foliage and elegant white blooms. It's also famous as one of the best air-purifying houseplants.

Type:

  • Evergreen perennial, usually grown indoors.

Origin:

  • Tropical Americas and Southeast Asia.

Foliage:

  • Glossy, lance-shaped, deep green leaves.

Flowers:

  • White, sail-like spathes (the "flowers") surrounding a yellow spadix. Blooms several times a year in good conditions.

Height:

  • Usually 30-90cm (dwarf to large varieties).

Care Tips

  • Light: Thrives in medium to low light; avoid harsh direct sun.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Leaves drooping = a clear sign it needs water (it perks back up quickly).
  • Humidity: Prefers higher humidity but tolerates average indoor air. Mist occasionally.
  • Temperature: 18-27C (65-80F); avoid cold drafts.
  • Fertiliser: Balanced houseplant feed every 4-6 weeks in spring/summer.
  • Repotting: Every 1-2 years when roots outgrow the pot.

  • Air purification: Known to help remove indoor pollutants (benzene, formaldehyde, etc).
  • Flowering: Best flowering occurs in bright, indirect light. In low light, you'll get more foliage and fewer flowers.
  • Toxicity: Mildly toxic to pets if chewed (cause mouth irritation).

  • Spathiphyllum 'Mauna Loa Supreme' - Tall, elegant flowers.
  • Spathiphyllum Wallisii - The common smaller peace lily.
