Popular Types for Homes

  • Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid): Most common houseplant orchid, easy to grow, flowers last months.
  • Cymbidium: Tall spikes with many flowers; cooler-loving.
  • Denbrobium: Elegant canes with sprays of flowers.

  • Cattleya: Large, showy, often fragrant flowers.
  • Vanda: Bold, vibrant blooms; needs high humidity and light.

General Care Tips

  • Light: Bright, indirect light (south/east-facing windows are ideal).
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then let roots drey slightly. Frequency depends on type but generally once a week.
  • Humidity: 50-70% preferred (mist or use a pebble tray).
  • Temperature: Most like 18-25C (65-77F).
  • Feeding: Dilute orchid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks during growth/flowering.
  • Potting mix: Use orchid bark mix (never standard potting soil).
  • Repotting: Every 1-2 years, once bark breaks down or roots crowd the pot.

Extra Notes:

  • Orchids are not as delicate as people think! Most fail due to overwatering or lack of light.
  • Some orchids are evergreen (Phalaenopsis), while others have a resting/dormant phase (Cymbidium, Dendrobium).
  • Many varieties can be re-bloom yearly if given the right conditions.
