Anthurium often called Flamingo Flower or Painter's Palette is a striking tropical houseplant known for its shiny heart-shaped leaves and long-lasting red, pink, white, or green spathes (often mistake for flowers).

Type:

  • Evergreen perennial, often grown indoors.

Origin:

  • Central and South American rainforests.

Foliage:

  • Glossy, leathery, heart-shaped leaves.

Flowers:

  • The "flower" is actually a colourful spathe (red, pink, white, orange) with a yellow or cream spadix in the centre.

Blooming:

  • Can flower for many months of the year in good conditions.

Care Tips

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Too little will mean no flowers. Too much direct sun will scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist, but never soggy. Let the top inch dry between watering. Likes higher humidity (50-70%). Mist or use a pebble tray.

Temperature:

  • Prefers 18-27C (65-80F). Avoid cold drafts.

Soil:

  • A chunky, free-draining mix (like orchid mix with added peat/perlite).

Fertiliser:

  • Every 6-8 weeks in spring/summer with a balanced liquid feed.

Cleaning:

  • Wipe leaves regularly to keep them glossy and healthy.

Tips for Success

  • Encouraging blooms: Needs steady warmth, bright indirect light, and consistent humidity.
  • Repotting: Every 2-3 years into fresh, airy mix.
  • Toxicity: Mildly toxic if ingested (keep away from pets & children).

Varieties:

  • Anthurium andreanum: classic flamingo flower.
  • Anthurium scherzerianum: curly, orange-red spadix.
  • Foliage types: prized for large, velvety, white-veined leaves.
